A couple of months ago we were invited by our friends Maarten & Kaia to join them on their wedding trip in Estonia. Having never visited Estonia and somehow honoured by the question we confirmed our presence and booked our flight tickets with Brussels Airlines. Yesterday we boarded our airplane that would take us to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia.
Unfortunately the boarding was delayed by 1 hour so we made a detour via the Cheers & Beers pub in the airport and enjoyed a freshly poured Leffe. I asked for large beers, without knowing that we would receive 0,5 liters beer for that. Cheers to that!
Finally it was time to board, so we started our walk to the gate. Once arrived we received the notification that boarding would start an extra half hour later, thus even more delay. Blessed by the time we could witness the beautiful sunset at the airport, in expectation of the boarding to start.
The airplane on duty for our flight to Estonia was an Embraer ERJ 145, a twin-engine regional jet. The smallest airplane we ever flew with so far. It can fit 50 passengers.
Once finished boarding, we took off and would land in Tallinn almost 2 hours later.Unfortunately, due to the delay, the airport of Tallinn was already closed, so we landed in Riga (01:16 AM), the capital of Latvia.
Ladies and Gentleman, this is your captain speaking. As some of you may already have noticed, this is not the airport of Tallinn. Due to the delay and time, the airport of Tallinn was already closed and could not receive us. This is why the airplane has been redirected to Riga (Latvia). The ground staff of Riga airport will further inform you.
Bad luck for us, being 335 km away from our destination.
The airport arranged a bus that would take us to Tallinn. Counting must be something difficult because the bus had 1 place too short to fit all the passengers. The outcome? We had to leave 1 passenger behind, in Riga. Hope he ever got to Tallinn the day after.
At 6:55 AM we arrived at Tallinn airport, more than 7 hours later as planned. It was finally time to start our Estonian adventure, after a good sleep off course.
